What is troubadour music?

Accepted Answer

The troubadours were court composers from Medieval Occitania, a region that encompassed Southern France and areas of present-day Spain and Italy. They are often associated with male musicians, singing the praises of a courtly lady; in fact there were also many female troubadours, or trobairitz.

How does troubadour music relate to Sephardic and Arabic Andalusian music?

Accepted Answer

The troubadours of Occitania were composing at a time of travel and movement; many of them would have come into contact with Jewish and Muslim musicians from Spain, and several of them went to the Middle East during the crusades. There is evidence for musical exchange between the cultures therefore.

Are there any written records of the medieval music in the programme?

Accepted Answer

Aside from the troubadour and Catholic Spanish songs, notation of Medieval Sephardic and Arabic songs does not itself survive. The songs from these traditions survive instead as folk songs; themselves a document to migration and travel from their musical origins to the present day.

What do you mean by a 'dramatic reimagination'?

Accepted Answer

We are staging our performance of the songs in a dramatised way that is sensitive to the characters and stories that the songs portray. Our concert programme will therefore be divided into the following sections: Love at Dawn, Separation over Seas, Spiritual Solace, Heartache and Longing.
