About this event

This event will develop subject knowledge and English teaching expertise through a range of mini sessions using either expert-led annotation work, discussions around character, theme or context, or modelled teaching strategies.

We are looking forward to bringing this event to Southampton for its third year, and are excited to hear again from a range of speakers. Details are to be finalised, and we are still accepting submissions!

Sessions to include:

Hannah Howells: Igniting a love of writing - Writing is more than a subject: it is an opportunity to express, create and open doors. In schools, as we nourish writers from early on, we can enable them to progressively flourish by inspiring them and sparking passion. But to do this, we need children - and their teachers - to enjoy writing first.

Callan Davies and Emily Henry: At Home with Shakespeare - This session introduces a new free digital resource—an interactive gamified room—that contextualises Shakespeare and contemporary writing and offers opportunities for creative writing and history. It will do so to introduce recent critical approaches to the period and their possibilities for the classroom, focussing in particular on everyday experience and 'ordinary" life to bring Shakespeare closer to home in every sense. The session will also explore how to incorporate this into teaching, with particular reference to exploring texts in context.

Will May: Creativity in the Classroom - How can we encourage our students to be creative in the classroom? This talks draws on the 'Creative Writing in Schools' initiative, which pairs undergraduate English students at the University of Southampton with KS3 classrooms. It also outlines a new project encouraging young people to use objects from a 'maker's box' to re-imagine their classrooms in creative ways.

John Murphy: Ways of teaching and using pair and group work - We will focus on: 1. when and how we can use pair/group work; 2. ways of teaching pupils to work as a pair/group; 3. how to address barriers, problems, scenarios.

The event will be held on June 18th at St Anne's Catholic School and Sixth Form College, Carlton Road, Southampton, SO15 2WZ.

Please arrive to the school’s reception to be signed in.

We will be welcoming attendees from 3:30pm, with sessions starting at 3:50pm. The event is expected to run until 5:15pm.

Refreshments and snacks will be provided.

There will be some time to network between sessions as well as before and after the event.
